First: City of Boynton Beach, or unincorporated county?

A Boynton Beach mailing address doesn't always mean City of Boynton Beach jurisdiction. Much of the eastern side is inside city limits. Farther west, the Boynton Beach mailing area includes both City neighborhoods and unincorporated Palm Beach County communities.

Which one applies decides who provides police and fire rescue, who issues permits, who enforces code, who supplies utilities, and which taxes appear on the bill. Confirm it for the specific parcel — the Property Appraiser's record lists the municipality, and the county's municipal boundary maps and list of municipalities show the lines.

The layout

Boynton is wide, and the grid is simple once you have the frame.

Running north–south: A1A on the barrier island — which belongs to Ocean Ridge and other towns, not Boynton Beach — then Federal Highway (US-1) through the eastern city, Seacrest Boulevard a little inland, then I-95, Congress Avenue, Military Trail, Jog Road and Lyons Road heading west, with Florida's Turnpike farther out.

Running east–west: Boynton Beach Boulevard is the main spine, with Woolbright Road to the south and Gateway Boulevard and Hypoluxo Road to the north. These are how you cross the city and reach I-95.

The frame to keep in mind: the marina and the downtown core sit east, near Federal Highway and East Ocean Avenue; west of I-95 you'll find a mix of planned communities, gated and not, and standalone neighborhoods along the arterials; and the beach is across a bridge in another town.

Getting to the beach

The City of Boynton Beach's Oceanfront Park is at 6415 N. Ocean Boulevard in Ocean Ridge, across the Intracoastal. The City operates it and lists paid parking there. Parking rules, rates and any resident programs change, so check the City's current parking page rather than relying on what a neighbor paid last year.

Nearby, Palm Beach County's Ocean Inlet Park, on the Boynton Inlet in Ocean Ridge, lists a guarded beach area. In both places, follow the posted parking rules; the streets around them belong to other municipalities with their own restrictions.

Setting up services

• Water and sewer: the City of Boynton Beach Utilities serves many addresses, including some outside city limits — the City lists different connection charges inside and outside the city. Other addresses are on other providers. Confirm the provider for the parcel before closing, and see the City's applications for service.
• Electric: confirm the provider for the address and set up service before closing.
• Trash and recycling: collection depends on the jurisdiction. Check the schedule and bulk-pickup rules with the City or the county, whichever serves the address.
• Internet: availability varies by street and building. Confirm what's actually serviceable at the address, especially if you work from home.

Who handles what

• Inside city limits: the City provides police and fire rescue, and handles permits, zoning and code enforcement.
• Unincorporated addresses: the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue and county planning, zoning and code enforcement generally apply. Confirm for the parcel.
• Countywide: property records and homestead filing are with the Property Appraiser; property taxes, and vehicle and vessel registration and driver license services, are with the Tax Collector.
• Schools: assignment comes from the School District of Palm Beach County and depends on the exact address; boundaries can change. Use the district's boundary maps rather than a listing.
• Docks and seawalls: marine construction can involve more than one level of review, so start with the permitting jurisdiction for the parcel early.

If you own a boat

The rules and conditions that affect boaters change, so rely on the authorities rather than a neighbor's summary:

• Registration: vessel registration is handled through the Tax Collector.
• Boating rules and manatee zones: see the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's boating regulations and manatee protection zones.
• Drawbridges: Intracoastal bridge openings are set by federal regulation and can change temporarily — check the regulation and the Coast Guard's Local Notices to Mariners.
• The inlet and launch access: Boynton Inlet sits between Manalapan and Ocean Ridge. Palm Beach County's Ocean Inlet Park lists marina slips — check their current status — and the City lists boat-trailer parking at Harvey E. Oyer Jr. Park on North Federal Highway.
• Storms: plan where the boat goes before a storm is named, and confirm what your marina or dock arrangement requires.

Getting around

• Tri-Rail: Boynton Beach Station is at 2800 High Ridge Road. Station parking has its own registration rules — see Tri-Rail's station page.

• Airports: President Donald J. Trump International Airport and Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International. Compare routes and schedules for the trips you make.

Hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. Before it starts:
